An Ode to Tailgating

There are a few things I should clear up:

1. The Midwest is crazy about football.

2. Iowa is crazy about the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

3. Iowa City (home of the Hawkeyes) is crazy about tailgating.

And tomorrow is  our first game of the season.

Of course people go to watch the Hawkeyes dominate, but other activities are usually involved.

You know, normal things like:

  • Wearing vintage Hawkeye shirts
  • Making funny faces in photographs
  • Drinking beer at 5 in the morning
  • Cooking out of the back of your car
  • Walking a few miles to find a parking spot
  • Occasionally passing out before the game starts at 12.

It’s a tradition! And the whole state of Iowa participates.

Although we’ll be out of town this weekend, we’ll be there in spirit.

Go Hawkeyes!

What sport reigned supreme at your college? Anyone have any cool mascot names?

  1. Here in KC (also midwest, what what!) we’ve got some crazy college football fans but I’d say we’re more into the pro football……at least the people I know. It’s more of a college basketball, pro football town. Probably because we’re a border city so there is a lot of tension between the Missouri and Kansas peeps.

  2. woo hoo! I remember my penn state tailgating days. Not sure I could keep up with it anymore!

  3. Love it! My husband’s buddy is a Hawkeye Fan and my hubby is of course a Badger Fan. They are going to the Badger/Hawkeye game this Fall should be CRAZY fun!

  4. Hmm… that sounds like Nascar tailgating… haha

  5. Love IA hawkeye football! Sadly, I was the only member of my family NOT at the game yesterday:(
